The different types of scholarships

A Merit-based scholarship is financial aid for which financial need is not used to determine the recipient. This may be determined by students athletic, academic, and artistic or other abilities.

The need-based scholarship is financial aid for which the student and their family's financial situation is the primary factor in determining the recipient. This scholarship will cover all or even part of the tuition and it also may cover room and board.

ethnicity-based scholarship

The Ethnicity-based scholarship is financial aid where the applicants must initially qualify by race, religion, or national origin. Once applicants are filtered due to ethnicity, additional factors are then considered to determine the
final recipients.

Some scholarships have a "bond" requirement. Recipients may be required to work for a particular employer for a standard period of time, or to work in the city or very busy areas; if not they may have to repay the amount of money they received from the scholarship.

Places where a scholarship can be obtained

Guidance Counselors started to explore scholarship opportunities, so high school students should check with their counselors, because of the resources for local scholarships. Also check with community foundations, many countries, cities, and regions have a local foundation dedicated to giving money which are called grants, these are given to people and organizations that really need them in the area. Churches are also a great source to get scholarships from. The Chamber of Commerce may offer grants to students in the community, especially those planning on careers in Business or Public Service.

Some volunteer organizations offer scholarships or grants to students whose background or chosen field coincides with the field of the organization. Also a well established university may help fund college education for students who are extremely talented who do not have a way to pay for their furthering education.
