Types of Federal Financial Aid

There are several different types of financial aid that can be offered to you federally. Some of these types include student loans, grants, and student work study programs. Student loans are loans that you borrow that need to be paid back either while you are in college, or after you have graduated or dropped out of college. Grants are sort of like scholarships because they are money that is given to you that you do not need to pay back. It is much more preferable than student loans which can end up putting you in debt if you fall behind on your payments or lose your job. Student work study programs are programs that you will be offered that require you to work at your school. You will not receive payment like you would normally at a job. However, instead of making the money you earn working, all of it will immediately turn into your monthly college payment.

Qualifications for Financial Aid

You are probably wondering whether or not there is anything that you need to do or any qualifications that you need to meet in order to receive federal financial aid. Well, for one thing, you need to make sure that you meet the deadlines for sending your application for financial aid. You need to be a United States citizen or an eligible non citizen. You need to have a valid social security number, and have a high school diploma or the equivalent. You also need to be enrolled or accepted as a student that is working toward degree or certificate in an eligible program at a school that participates in the federal student aid programs.

How Much Will You Receive?

The amount of money that you will receive through federal financial aid programs depends on a number of different factors. For starters, it will depend on what year of college you are currently in. It will also depend on your amount of Expected Family Contribution. One of the main factors that it will depend on, however, is how much the college that you are going to be attending costs.

What Are My Other Options?

You have a number of other options if you do not qualify for federal financial aid. One of these options is financial aid from private or state lenders. Another option is financial aid from your school, as many schools offer financial aid to those that they feel needs it.
