What is distance learning?

Distance learning is becoming a popular option for an increasing number of undergraduate students. Distance learning allows a student to continue their studies outside of the classroom. The mean by with they achieve this is typically over the Internet. Many of the top rated universities are offering classes and degree programs in this manner. This alternative to classroom learning is ideal for students with busy lifestyles that simply do not have the time to attend regularly scheduled college classes.

How does it work?

Even if you are not technologically savvy, most students are able to navigate through these online classes. Communication with professors and other students are typically conducted through e-mail. Some classes may include a forum where students and professors interact with each other regarding the coursework. A website for the class is usually available for the student to navigate through. This site would typically have the course's syllabus and assignments listed on it. Additionally, the professor may provide you with outside resources that may assist with the coursework.

Online degrees

Some schools simply offer a few online courses for undergraduates. Yet, there are accredited universities that offer degree programs that you can earn completely online. Universities and colleges, such as the University of Phoenix, allow a student to earn either a bachelor's or master's degree in the convenience of their own home. This type of setup is ideal for students that need to work or older students that have to work their studies in around their family.

The drawbacks

There are some drawbacks to distance learning. The major one is that there has been a high incidence of problems with academic integrity. Without the monitoring of a professor, a student can cheat more easily and effectively. Adaptations have been made though that has made it more difficult for cheating to occur. Many professors are assigning longer and more detailed assignments to ensure that the student is doing their own research. Another drawback is that occasionally online universities are not respected in the same way as a typical four year university. This may lead to problems with acquiring a job down the line.
