Direct Plus Loans
Direct Plus Loans are available from many different companies and they are designed especially with struggling students in mind. Parents can even take out a Direct Plus Loan for their child; it just depends upon where you go for help. The money itself is sent from the US Department of Education. If you are applying for an ordinary Direct Plus Loan it goes straight to your school and depending upon their rules, you may have to endorse a disbursement check and send it back to the school or other place of education.
How Much You Can Borrow
How much you can actually borrow with a Direct Plus Loan depends upon the cost of your yearly attendance fees. You can even still borrow a Direct plus loan if you are receiving other financial aid; it just depends upon how much help you are currently getting. For example, if your yearly attendance fees are around $7,000 and you get $4,000 from other financial systems, you will roughly be entitled to $3,000 from a Direct Plus Loan.
Are There Any Charges Involved?
Direct Plus Loans often charge around four percent of the actual loan amount. This tends to be deducted over time and it is spread out to make the cost more affordable, usually monthly. With a Direct Plus Loan, the money goes to the government in order to help reduce the costs of loans. As with any other loan, if a direct plus loan is not paid back on time and monthly repayments are not met, there are often other charges involved including late fees and collection costs.
What Happens If You Cannot Make Repayments?
It is possible to postpone some repayments if you are having financial difficulties. However, you really do have to contact the loan company and let them know that you are having problems. If the problems with repayments are only temporary, you could receive forbearance on the loan where payments are either lowered or stopped for a while. On loans that do receive forbearance, interest is usually still charged during that period.
How to Apply For Direct Plus Loans
If you are interested in applying for a Direct Plus Loan, then you will need to fill out an application form. You can get this form from your school or place of educations financial department. If your parents are getting the loan they will have to undergo a credit check. If your parents do not pass a credit check, it is still possible to apply for a Direct plus loan if you have somebody who can agree to endorse the loan. Basically what this means is that a friend or a relative can agree to endorse the loan and pay back any money owed if your parents cannot make the repayments at any time.
